5 ways you could gain Australian citizenship

  • You should be born to a former Australian citizen

  • If you born in Papua New Guinea before independence in 1975

  • If you born in Australia and are stateless

  • At the time of your adoption at least one of your adoptive parents must be an Australian citizen

  • If your adoptive parent became an Australian citizen by descent or adoption.

  • If you are over the age of 18, you need to show that you are of good character.

Resume citizenship:

Being former citizens, you can resume your Australian citizenship if you are no longer a citizen. If you are not qualifying for that then you need to access whether you are eligible for citizenship by conferral. 

You are permitted to resume your Australian citizenship if:

  • If you a citizen of another country before April 2002

  • To keep citizenship of another country you gave up or renounce your Australian citizenship

  • To evade considerable hardship or harm you renounced your Australian citizenship

  • If your responsible parents ended when you were a child, your Australian citizenship was withdrawn. 

  • If you live outside of Australia and Papuea New Guinea for seven consecutive years between 26 Jan 1948 and 8 Oct 1958 your Australian citizenship will end. However, you can become Australian citizen by registration or naturalization. 

  • If you are over the age of 18, you need to should you are of good character.
